Abstract

The last few decades have unleashed a global euphoria for so-called platform-based vacation accommodation, conceived by the incorporation of digital applications in the tourism sector. Having the possibility of putting private homes on offer, partially or totally, has motivated intense processes of socio-spatial transformation in addition to phenomena such as gentrification and touristification, generators of social tensions and increased land rental costs for local residential spaces.

This research focuses precisely on the analysis of platform-based vacation accommodation, its insertion into local housing areas and two phenomena attributed to this process, gentrification and tourism, in a polygon of traditional residence spaces, located in the tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco.

The results obtained made it possible to identify factors such as the disappearance of traditional homes and the construction of new apartment towers. Likewise, it was possible to identify the adaptation of properties to establish multiple businesses that meet the needs of visitors, in addition to effects generated by these processes such as the gradual loss of the resident population, the increase in land and housing prices, as well as the neighborhood
identity itself.
