Abstract

Every city would be defined by two types of elements that coexist in competition and complementarity. Therefore, while in some cities the visible predominate, in others the intangible persists. In this coexistence, there would be cities that, due to their own characteristics, would tend to stand out in the latter, where the religious aspect is prominent, as seen in the cities of viceregal Mexico. Studying the daily life of these populations is complex, as the intangible elements involved encompass a range of topics and perspectives that are difficult to identify and document. Additionally, they have been disregarded as a means of managing the city. The aim of this text is to propose a possible approach and thematic synthesis of both the theories and theorists who have addressed this topic. To that end, a longitudinal and transversal bibliographic review, carried out until academic saturation is reached, reveals that these conceptual approaches never appear in isolation. Instead, they consistently appear in conjunction with other approaches, which, through a second key finding, enable the construction of four auxiliary categorical groups to better understand this complexity: identity, culture and daily-life; neighbourhood, space, territory and place; neighbourhood festivals and religion and neighbourhood and popular religiosity.
