Abstract

The notes of this essay come from a study recently carried out in the port, specifically at the Historic Center of Mazatlán. The objective has been to show and analyze the different harmful effects of tourism on the cultural heritage of the historic center, in a very particular area of it: the area surrounding Plaza Machado and seafront called Paseo Olas Altas, the first zone of port beach, and also the first tourist zone of the city. The methodological instruments applied were the analysis of bibliographic and newspaper sources, photographic survey, field trips and participant observation; material compiled some time ago with the same purpose is included. The results of the study determined that the most recent transformations of the architectural and urban permanences of the Historic Center have been induced by the touristification process and the interest of the economic growth of tourism, above the
preservation of the architectural and urban heritage, to lack of a vision with projection of sustainability in all this problem. For this reason, the conclusion is the necessary attention to the phenomenon in order to preserve the material culture of the old town subsisting in the port.
